The short answer
FictionBook 2 (FB2) is an XML-based format for structured books, especially text-focused fiction. EPUB is a package containing a reading order, metadata, content documents and supporting resources. Neither extension guarantees a well-made book: the source file and the reading app matter as much as the format.
If an FB2 book opens correctly in your preferred app, you do not need to convert it just to change its extension. For Apple Books, an EPUB-focused reader or the Amazon Send to Kindle workflow, an EPUB copy is usually more useful. Keep the FB2 original until you have checked the conversion.
FB2 and EPUB at a glance
| Question | FB2 | EPUB |
|---|---|---|
| How is the book stored? | An XML document, sometimes distributed in a ZIP file. | A ZIP-based package with metadata, a reading order and content resources. |
| Can it include images? | Yes, image data can be embedded in the document. | Yes, images and other resources can be packaged with the content. |
| Is text reflowable? | Usually, in a compatible FB2 reader. | Usually; EPUB also supports fixed-layout publications. |
| Which reader should I use? | An app that explicitly supports FB2, such as a compatible version of FBReader or a desktop library tool. | EPUB-compatible apps and devices, including Apple Books and Kobo. |
| What about Kindle? | Convert to a supported delivery format first. | Submit supported EPUB documents to Send to Kindle; Amazon converts them. Direct USB transfer is a different workflow. |
What conversion can change
Converting a file is not the same as renaming it. The converter has to interpret its structure and write a new book. Chapter order, footnotes, inline illustrations, font choices and complex formatting deserve a manual check. A cover appearing in one app does not prove that every image survived conversion.
Our FB2 to EPUB converter reads supported DRM-free FB2 files and creates a text edition with chapter order, basic formatting, metadata and supported embedded covers. Inline illustrations are omitted with a notice. Original fonts and internal links are not retained; footnote text may remain, but its links need checking. It is not a promise of lossless reproduction. Books with complex layouts may need a desktop tool with more conversion controls.
How to move an FB2 book to an EPUB reader
- Keep a backup and make sure you have permission to convert the book. This tool does not remove DRM.
- Open the FB2 to EPUB converter and choose the supported FB2 file. Unzip a compressed FB2 download first if needed.
- Review any warnings, convert, then download the EPUB.
- Open the result in the app or device you actually use. Check the first and last chapter, the contents, accented characters, covers and footnotes before discarding anything.
Frequently asked questions
Is EPUB always smaller than FB2?
No. Images, embedded resources and compression settings influence size. Compare your actual output rather than assuming one extension will always be smaller.
Can I send FB2 directly through Send to Kindle?
Use a format the service accepts, such as EPUB, and check Amazon’s current requirements. Uploading an EPUB to Send to Kindle lets Amazon convert it; copying an EPUB by USB does not make it a native Kindle book.
Does converting remove copy protection?
No. Use an unprotected copy that you are allowed to convert. Changing an extension does not remove encryption or create a valid new format.
